To be honest (as Abe would say), St Moritz really had an uphill battle to win our hearts. Zermatt set an extremely high bar and as soon as we arrived in St Moritz we saw the storefronts of one super high end brand after another and questioned the vibe. But this morning, St Moritz really showed off. Our guide Susi was as friendly to us as she was to every local (Susi knows all 5,000 residents in this town!). She took us to many of the Olympic event sites (St Moritz hosted in 1928 and 1948) and to the most famous chocolate shop Laderach. She showed us the lake and the leaning tower of St Moritz that was built in the 13th century and leans more than the one in Pisa. Then it was time to say “see you soon” to the Gustafsons at the train station (fittingly). They left for Zurich and we headed toward Morteratsch. We came for the cheese demonstration but didn’t know we would also get to pet and feed goats and rabbits. The Alp-Schaukäserei cheese shop was so charming. We’re still not really clear on their method of making cheese because the demonstration was in Swiss German but it sure was fun to watch. We gobbled up our cheese board before making the 30 minute train ride back. We enjoyed drinks and dancing to the St Moritz jazz festival before a delicious sushi dinner. The dinner conversation tonight was especially mature with the kids sharing thoughtful views on parenting and on which experiences are most memorable.
